WHY HAS THE STATE BAR CHOSEN FOLEYHOAG LAW FIRM, AWARDED THIS YEAR AS THE BEST PLACE TO WORK FOR LGBTQ, TO REPRESENT ALBANIA IN THE COURT OF ARBITRATION (ICSID) AGAINST THE ITALIAN ENTREPRENEUR FRANCESCO BECCHETTI?

(April 4, 2021)

Albania has finally lost two days ago the trial with the Italian entrepreneur Francesco Becchetti, related to the compensation requested by him for the closure of “Agon” television in 2015. International Center for the Settlement of Investment Disputes, INTERNATIONAL CENTER FOR THE SETTLEMENT OF INVESTMENT DISPUTES (ICSID), an arbitration court, part of the World Bank, sentenced Albania in April 2019 with 110 million euros, judging that the closure of the television was “politically motivated”. This punishment is considered the highest value with which Albania has been punished by an arbitration court.

To be represented in the appeal process, the State Bar of the Republic of Albania had selected the American studio, Foley Hoag. While in front of her, the Italian entrepreneur Becchetti was represented by two large law firms, Debevoise & Plimpton, based in New York, and Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, based in Paris and New York.

If you see the ranking and evaluation of the firm selected by the Albanian government, you will learn that Foley Hoag Law Firm, among other things, has received a Tipping the Scales award from the Diversity and Flexibility Alliance in recognition of the commitment to diversity and inclusion within the firm’s partnership.

Our FoleyHoag colleagues provide pro bono representation in many different types of matters, including immigration, domestic violence, civil rights, criminal defense, education, nonprofit law, corporate social responsibility and intellectual property.

Also, from the information we have, we learn that Foley Hoag Law Firm secured a perfect ranking this year in the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index -2021. This is as businesses that achieve a 100 percent rating on their reports are recognized by the Human Rights Campaign as: “The Best Place to Work for LGBTQ Equality. The Albanian government, through the State Attorney’s Office, managed to show once again in its international relations the care and sensitivity it shows towards the LGBT community, giving it the opportunity to defend before the international arbitration courts not only its mullahs but also its public finances.

An excellent work of the government team that, in addition to the love for rainbows, also carries a bill of 110 million euros!

Success, success!

Goodbye!
